Pediatric Sealants & Fluoride Treatments in Vero Beach, FL
The two simplest, most effective cavity-prevention tools we have for kids are dental sealants and fluoride varnish - both quick, painless, and applied right at routine cleaning visits. The CDC has consistently identified sealants as one of the most effective cavity-prevention interventions for children. Fluoride varnish has been shown to prevent up to a third of cavities in baby teeth. At Nickel Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Andrew Nickel - a board-certified pediatric dentist (ABPD Diplomate) - recommends both as core preventive care for most children.
What Are Dental Sealants?
A dental sealant is a thin protective coating painted onto the chewing surface of a back tooth - sealing the deep grooves and pits where food and bacteria can collect. The grooves on a permanent molar are too narrow for toothbrush bristles to reach, which is why those teeth are the most cavity-prone in childhood. A sealant fills the grooves with a smooth surface that’s easy to clean and bacteria-resistant.
Sealants don’t replace brushing or flossing - they protect the surface a toothbrush can’t reach.
When Should My Child Get Sealants?
Two main windows:
- Around age 6-7, when the first permanent molars (the “6-year molars”) come in. These teeth come in behind the last baby molars and are often the first permanent teeth to erupt.
- Around age 11-13, when the second permanent molars (“12-year molars”) come in.
Sealants protect teeth through the most cavity-prone years (ages 6-14). For children at higher cavity risk, we may also recommend sealing certain baby molars or premolars.
What to Expect During a Sealant Appointment
Sealants take about a minute per tooth and require no anesthesia or drilling.
- Clean the tooth thoroughly to remove plaque and debris.
- Apply an etching gel for a few seconds. This roughens the enamel slightly so the sealant bonds well.
- Rinse the gel off and dry the tooth.
- Paint the liquid sealant onto the chewing surface.
- Cure with a UV light for about 20 seconds. The sealant hardens.
- Done. Your child can eat and drink normally right after the appointment.
The whole process is comfortable, quick, and most children find it easy. A typical sealant lasts 5-10 years before it may need touch-up; we check sealant integrity at every cleaning.
Fluoride Varnish - The Other Half of Prevention
A fluoride varnish is a thin, sticky gel painted onto the teeth at the end of a cleaning visit. It strengthens the outer layer of enamel and is especially valuable for children at higher cavity risk.
How it’s applied:
- Quick brush of the teeth to dry them.
- Paint the varnish onto each tooth surface.
- The varnish sets in seconds and continues working for hours after the appointment.
Your child can eat soft foods immediately, but we’ll ask them to skip crunchy/chewy foods, hot drinks, and brushing for 4-6 hours so the varnish stays on the teeth and does its work.
Frequency: Twice a year for most children at routine cleaning visits. Up to four times a year for children at higher cavity risk.
Fluoride Toothpaste at Home
Office fluoride varnish is the boost; home fluoride toothpaste is the daily foundation. Per current AAPD guidance:
- Rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste twice daily, from the eruption of the first tooth through about age 3
- Pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste twice daily, from age 3 onward (once your child can reliably spit)
This recommendation was updated by the AAPD in 2014 - older guidance to wait until age 2 or 3 to introduce fluoride toothpaste is outdated.
Connection to the School Sealant Program
The Florida Department of Health runs school-based dental sealant programs in Indian River County for some elementary schools. If your child has received sealants through a school program, we’ll check their integrity at each cleaning visit. School-based sealants and Nickel-applied sealants work the same way - the difference is just where they were placed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are answers to questions we hear most often. Call us anytime if you do not see yours.
Are Dental Sealants Safe for Children?
At what age should kids get dental sealants?
The two key windows are age 6-7 (when the first permanent molars come in) and age 11-13 (when the second permanent molars come in). Sometimes we also seal baby molars or premolars for children at higher cavity risk.
At What Age Should Children Get Dental Sealants in Vero Beach, FL?
Are sealants for kids covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover sealants for children under 18 as a preventive service. We verify your specific benefits before the appointment.
How Long Does a Fluoride Treatment Take?
How long do sealants last?
A typical sealant lasts 5-10 years. We check sealant integrity at every cleaning and re-apply if needed.
Can My Child Eat After a Fluoride Treatment?
Do kids still get fluoride treatments at the dentist?
Yes. Fluoride varnish is one of the most effective preventive treatments available for children - recommended by the AAPD and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The CDC supports its use as standard preventive care.
Do Sealants Replace Brushing and Flossing?
How much fluoride is too much?
At the doses used in dental fluoride varnish and in proper-amount fluoride toothpaste (rice-grain or pea-sized), fluoride is safe and well-studied. The risk parents sometimes worry about - fluorosis - is associated with chronic over-ingestion of fluoride during tooth development, which is why we follow the small-amount-toothpaste guidance carefully.
Can I refuse fluoride at the dentist for my child?
Yes - fluoride application is always your choice. We’ll give you our clinical recommendation based on your child’s cavity risk, but the decision is always yours. If you decline fluoride, we’ll discuss alternative preventive strategies including dietary counseling and sealant emphasis.
Is fluoride in my tap water enough?
For most municipal water in Florida, fluoride levels meet recommended preventive targets. If your home uses well water or filtered water that removes fluoride, we may recommend supplemental fluoride. Bring it up at your visit. ## Schedule a Cleaning + Sealant Appointment Sealants and fluoride varnish are typically applied at routine cleaning visits.
